Know in advance what your photos should express<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>Ultimately, you are in charge of your visual brand. What do you want your photos to SAY about your music? Do your homework! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Match your music and visual vibes. <\/b><span>What approach feels true?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>B&amp;W or color?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Gritty or clean?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Friendly or aggressive?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Intimate (looking at the camera) or aloof (looking away)?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>Remember, you won\u2019t be able to convey the full breadth of your artistry or personality with one photo, so decide on one or two essential elements of <a href=\"https:\/\/podcast.cdbaby.com\/2016\/10\/175-authentic-artist-branding-bootcamp-diy-musician-podcast-live\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">your musical identity<\/a> that can be captured visually.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When you have a clear idea of what you\u2019re going for ahead of time, you\u2019ll be more comfortable in front of the camera during the shoot.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Scout_your_locations_for_the_photo_shoot\"><\/span>2. Scout your location(s) for the photo shoot<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>Your band photo shoot should happen in a setting that enhances the mood of your music. Check out a few locations ahead of time, and don\u2019t be afraid to ask permission to shoot at a local museum, monument, park, etc. Just get permits if they\u2019re required!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Do you want to be photographed with an exotic outdoor background? Do you want to appear front-and-center in a controlled studio environment with a flat background and lots of lighting? Either approach can be effective, depending on your aesthetic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Choose_what_youll_wear_during_your_band_photo_shoot\"><\/span>3. Choose what you\u2019ll wear during your band photo shoot<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWardrobe can make or break it,\u201d says Josh. \u201cThink about the voice and story you are trying to tell; if you\u2019re a band trying to have a cool vibe, don\u2019t show up like you\u2019re going to take the SATs. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I photographed this band the other day \u2013 they came with a trunk full of clothing and that\u2019s great.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Wear stuff you love and feel comfortable in. What\u2019s the most natural wardrobe for you? Your clothes are part of the voice you use to tell your story. Know what you want to convey; you have to look the part.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On the tech side if you\u2019re going to shoot in studio, patterns are not the best, but it still depends mostly on voice. That said, no wrinkles (steam your clothes!); if it\u2019s distressed and hole-y, cool, but wrinkles look unprofessional.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Personally, I love neutral colors, and clothes that blend in with the environment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Still not sure what to wear? Wear what you\u2019d wear to a gig. Avoid crazy costumes unless they\u2019re integral to your brand or concerts. Costumes can be distracting from what\u2019s most important: your face.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Make_a_photo_shoot_mood_board\"><\/span>4. Make a photo shoot mood board<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>Gather some images you like from favorite album covers, <a href=\"https:\/\/diymusician.cdbaby.com\/music-career\/music-websites\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">band websites<\/a>, magazines, or blogs. What do they have in common? This exercise will be helpful when you discuss the photo shoot with your photographer. It\u2019ll also help you clarify your goals if you\u2019re shooting your own artist photos.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Discuss_what_to_expect_during_your_musician_photo_shoot\"><\/span>5. Discuss what to expect during your musician photo shoot<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>What is your photographer\u2019s process? Will they shoot a thousand photos in rapid-fire? Will they take their time to set up only a handful of shots? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After the photo shoot, will they let you look at EVERY picture they took, or only send you their favorites? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There\u2019s no correct method, but you want to know what to expect.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As mentioned above, you should arrive with a clear idea of your objective. But you should also be open to the photographer\u2019s suggestions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Music is YOUR realm. Photography is THEIR realm \u2014 and as many photographers point out, taking a good portrait is a two-way conversation; make sure you\u2019re listening. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_List_all_the_different_musician_photos_youll_need_to_capture_during_your_photo_shoot\"><\/span>6. List all the different musician photos you\u2019ll need to capture during your photo shoot<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>A single quality photo won\u2019t be enough.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"There_might_be_multiple_uses_for_your_artist_photos_including\"><\/span><strong>There might be multiple uses for your artist photos, including:<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Social headers<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Social profile pics<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Blogs, podcasts, and other digital media<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Print media such as magazines and newspapers<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Album artwork<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Concert posters<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>\u201cAlways take into consideration what you\u2019re going to use it for,\u201d Josh advises. \u201cFor instance, if it\u2019s for the cover of a magazine, and there will need to be text on top, you need enough blank space so you can put the magazine brand on there; it\u2019s always good to have that safety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>With digital you can always crop it in, so have the photographer shoot a little bit wider. Use your judgment. Orientation is based on the scenario. Where are you going to use it? What are you going to use it for? Make sure you have enough space.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The more options you have, the more mileage you\u2019ll get \u2014 especially if you\u2019re pitching for a feature story that\u2019d require multiple photos.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"If_possible_youll_want_to_capture_the_following_photo_options\"><\/span>If possible, you\u2019ll want to capture the following photo options:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Close-ups and \u201cheadshots\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Photos that show your full body<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Individual photos of band members<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>The entire group<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>With instruments and without<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Color AND black and white<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Landscape AND portrait options<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>An image where you are off to one side (for banners, digital ads, etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>An image that can be cropped without killing the overall composition<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>An image that looks great when reduced to a thumbnail<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_Use_your_musician_photo_shoot_to_create_a_consistent_vibe_across_multiple_properties\"><\/span><strong>7. Use your musician photo shoot to create a consistent vibe across multiple properties<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>Your musician photos will appear on streaming platforms, <a href=\"https:\/\/diymusician.cdbaby.com\/music-promotion\/advertising-for-musicians\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">digital ads<\/a>, your social profiles, and more. Stay consistent!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That doesn\u2019t mean your photos are all from the same location with the same wardrobe. But the artist photos you use across your various web properties, cover art, and PR campaigns during a particular creative season should feel related in some way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Make sure all your photos speak to one another so the viewer can sense a larger story. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"8_Above_all_act_%E2%80%9Cnatural%E2%80%9D_during_your_musician_photo_shoot\"><\/span><strong>8. Above all, act \u201cnatural\u201d during your musician photo shoot<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhen I photographed Thom Yorke, he looked <\/span><i><span>uninterested<\/span><\/i><span> and super cool,\u201d says Josh. \u201cHe doesn\u2019t look cool because he cared; he looked cool because he is just being himself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Authenticity is key; if you don\u2019t believe in yourself, in what you\u2019re promoting, it\u2019s going to feel fake. Be yourself. As photographers we\u2019re here to capture you; we\u2019re not trying to do anything else.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Your music \u2014 it\u2019s an expression of who you are. Carry the same energy into your photos. if you\u2019re making a progressive rock song, then go and bring that energy to the shoot! Be honest.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That might be easier said than done; but it\u2019s part of the photographer\u2019s job to help you feel comfortable being <em>yourself<\/em> in front of the camera.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Can_you_shoot_your_own_musician_photos\"><\/span><span>Can you shoot your own musician photos?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>With a new smartphone camera, apps such as<a href=\"https:\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/photoshop-express.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> PS Express<\/a>, and free browser-based design tools like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canva.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Canva<\/a>, you can achieve a lot on your own. Some people might also feel MORE natural without a stranger around.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But again, the photographer should make you feel comfortable during your photo shoot, as well as provide their expert perspective and skills. Hiring a photographer can be an investment, but it\u2019s often an expense that pays off with better-quality visuals for your music.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Before you hire any photographer though, vet them! Check out the photos they\u2019ve chosen to highlight on their website. Ask other artists they\u2019ve worked with for testimonials. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Lastly, discuss with your photographer all the key points above.
