money<\/span><\/a><span> from their work than ever before. In the modern era, downloads and streaming have become the new \u201ctraditional\u201d revenue sources; that is, the ones most artists are familiar with and know they can earn money from based on use of their sound recording and composition. But a new term was needed to define the way to collect revenue from even newer, non-traditional sources. That new term is <\/span><b>monetization<\/b><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_is_monetization_different_from_other_ways_of_making_money_from_music\"><\/span><span>How is monetization different from other ways of making money from music?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>This is an important distinction. For the first hundred years of mass-distributed <\/span><span>recorded music<\/span><span>, radio and live performances, artists and songwriters earned money from their work in relatively straightforward ways:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">\n<b>Artists<\/b><span>: When their recordings were sold in a physical medium like vinyl or CD.<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">\n<b>Songwriters<\/b><span>: When their compositions were pressed onto a physical medium, or were played on the radio or performed live.<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>If the artist also happened to be credited as a songwriter for the underlying composition for a recording, they double-dipped and earned revenue from multiple sources. These ways still apply to artists and songwriters today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>And that was about it until the mid-\u201900s, when streaming came along and complicated things. As we\u2019ve covered in both our sound recording and publishing articles, royalties from streaming are payable to both the artists and songwriters. But earning revenue from streaming is also not strictly monetization in its current definition.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_music_monetization\"><\/span><span>What is music monetization?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>If earning money from recording sales, streams or composition performances isn\u2019t what we talk about when we talk about monetization, then what is?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In the parlance of our times (to quote the Dude), <\/span><b>music monetization is seeking out revenue from new, non-traditional sources<\/b><span>. What are those?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Where_can_I_monetize_my_music\"><\/span><span>Where can I monetize my music?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>There are quite a few platforms where you can earn revenue when your music is used in videos. These are called Social Video platforms:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Monetize_music_on_YouTube\"><\/span><span>Monetize music on YouTube<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span>YouTube is the first major video platform on the Internet, and also the most popular. That\u2019s why it\u2019s essential for artists to monetize their videos on YouTube in every way possible so they can earn all the revenue they\u2019re owed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Of all the video platforms, YouTube offers the most ways to earn money from your music. Here are all the revenue sources from YouTube:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>YouTube Music streaming revenue for Art Tracks. CD Baby delivers audio to YouTube as part of our distribution. Each song appears as its own \u201cvideo,\u201d with the artwork and other metadata.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Content ID from advertisements placed on videos. This involves promoting your music on YouTube.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Monetize_music_on_Facebook\"><\/span><span>Monetize music on Facebook<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span>Much as the term implies, Social Video applies to social media platforms like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/diymusician.cdbaby.com\/music-rights\/indie-musicians-can-monetize-music-facebook\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>Facebook<\/span><\/a><span>, too. As with YouTube, users can upload their own videos to Facebook and select music from its library to place in their creations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There are two types of videos users can upload on Facebook:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Facebook Videos: Videos of any length that are permanently posted to the user\u2019s profile (until the user wants to remove them) and can feature music selected from Facebook\u2019s library by the users.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Stories: Short-form 20 second videos that disappear after 24 hours. Like normal videos, users can select music from Facebook\u2019s library to place in these shorter videos.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>Just as with YouTube, CD Baby delivers music to Facebook\u2019s library when you opt in for Social Video Monetization and select Facebook Monetization. That means your music will be available to place in Facebook videos, so take advantage of that! Thus, most features that appear on one platform are also on the other, with a few notable differences and additions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There are three types of videos users can upload to Instagram:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/diymusician.cdbaby.com\/music-promotion\/how-to-get-your-music-on-instagram-stories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>Stories<\/span><\/a><span>: Like Facebook stories, Instagram stories are short-form videos that appear in the user\u2019s profile for 24 hours. Unlike Facebook, these can only be 15 seconds long.<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/diymusician.cdbaby.com\/releasing-music\/instagram-reels-music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>Reels<\/span><\/a><span>: Short-form videos similar to TikTok (more on that soon) that can be up to 30 seconds in length. When a user places your song in a Reel, it links back to your profile with all your music on Instagram. Don\u2019t forget you can also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/diymusician.cdbaby.com\/musician-tips\/make-instagram-reel-with-music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>create Reels with your own music<\/span><\/a><span> to get the party started!<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">\n<span>IGTV: This is Instagram\u2019s platform for longer videos of up to an hour. Artists can use this for anything from music videos to recorded live performances or interviews. Monetize IGTV directly with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.instagram.com\/blog\/announcements\/supporting-creators-on-instagram\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>IGTV Ads<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>(Instagram users can also add videos to their regular feed, but those aren\u2019t tagged or monetized through IG\u2019s Content ID like other forms of video are. Those attempts failed and the app is still active and as popular as ever in the U.S. From dance crazes to lip sync videos and pranks, TikTok skews younger in its audience and spontaneous in its content.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why is TikTok important for musicians?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Like the other Social Video platforms, TikTok users can select a song to add to match the content of their video. This is how artists <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/diymusician.cdbaby.com\/music-promotion\/tiktok-music-promotion-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>promote their music on TikTok<\/span><\/a><span>, by creating trends with one user choosing a song that fits perfectly with something they\u2019re doing, and others following with their own take on the action in the video (pranking their significant other, for example) set to the same song, and growing that song\u2019s (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/diymusician.cdbaby.com\/music-promotion\/10-ways-to-grow-your-audience-on-tiktok\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>along with the artist\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span>) popularity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How do I make money from TikTok?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>You earn money whenever a new video is created that uses your music. That\u2019s why having a song that becomes part of a new trend on TikTok can not only grow an artist\u2019s fanbase but also earn them some extra revenue!
