I write and produce music as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/artist\/45Z7TLBfSId65NDrTBr7t3?si=Q5diFYdASbqlspCLpvssZA&amp;dl_branch=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Siren and the Sea.<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>I recently released my second album <em>For Bathing<\/em> and got my songs placed on a bunch of playlists. This helped me go from about 80 monthly listeners to over 1,500.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>These were some of the playlists I got placed on:<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-30455\" src=\"https:\/\/diymusician.cdbaby.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Spotify-playlists.png\" alt=\"Getting on playlists\" width=\"718\" height=\"359\" title=\"| Craig Hordlow\"><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s been awesome to get so much love from my friends, fans, and people I didn\u2019t even know! And getting on these smaller playlists (what some people call \u201cuser-generated,\u201d \u201cthird party,\u201d or \u201cindependently curated\u201d playlists) has been a big part of building my fanbase.<\/p>\n<p><span>I used to believe that getting on playlists was just about good luck and knowing the right people. It felt rigged and totally impossible for a real indie artist to get on a Spotify editorial playlist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But I was wrong! I managed to get on an official Spotify playlist with over 100,000 followers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>There was a lot of work that had to happen before that though.<\/p>\n<p><b>In this article I\u2019m going to share with you the secrets I learned that helped me get placed on all these playlists.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>So let\u2019s get into it\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tip_1_%E2%80%93_You_have_to_ASK_for_playlist_placements\"><\/span>Tip #1 \u2013 You have to ASK for playlist placements<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>Many musicians think that they will get discovered just by uploading new music. Nope.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>You need to go find playlist curators and talk to them. Most of them want to connect with artists and hear your new music. You just have to ask.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Of course that\u2019s easier said than done. I was scared to reach out to playlist curators. Rejection sucks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But if you can confidently present your music, you will end up with way more people supporting you and your music.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tip_2_%E2%80%93_Do_your_playlist_research\"><\/span>Tip #2 \u2013 Do your playlist research<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>I know, we\u2019re musicians. Not scientists. But research is how you\u2019ll build a big list of playlists to pitch your music. And the bigger your list, the more chances you have of getting on hot playlists.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Heres_how_I_found_the_right_playlists_for_my_music\"><\/span><b>Here\u2019s how I found the right playlists for my music<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_1_Take_good_notes\"><\/span><b>Step 1: Take good notes<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span>Open up a spreadsheet in Excel, Google sheets, or just use pen and paper.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_2_Organize_your_playlist_list\"><\/span>Step 2: Organize your playlist list<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span>In your spreadsheet, make the following columns: Playlist Name, URL, Contacts, Followers, Pitched, and Placed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>T<\/span>his is my spreadsheet for pitching my single fountain of youth:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-30459\" src=\"https:\/\/diymusician.cdbaby.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Playlist-pitching-list-1024x531.png\" alt=\"Excel sheet of playlists\" width=\"746\" height=\"387\" title=\"| Craig Hordlow\"><\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_3_Describe_the_playlists\"><\/span>Step 3: Describe the playlists<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><b>This is really important.<\/b><span> You need to categorize your music and come up with keywords that fit your music:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>What genre is your music?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Who listens to your music?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>What\u2019s the mood?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Where are you from?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>What are people doing when they listen to your music?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>Answering these types of questions will help you search for the right playlists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I\u2019ll share with you how I categorized my new album, so you have a sense of what to do for your music\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><b>Genres:<\/b><span> Chill synth, Electronic, Neo-disco, Ambient, Synth-pop<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><b>Identity:<\/b><span> Female Producer, Latinx, Indie musician<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>Plus, my album,<\/span><i><span> For Bathing,<\/span><\/i><span>\u00a0was meant to be enjoyed while taking a bath. So I looked for any playlists made for taking baths!<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_4_Search_for_playlists\"><\/span>Step 4: Search for playlists<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span>Once you have your list of keywords for playlists, it\u2019s time to go find playlists!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Here are two ways you can find playlists:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Option A<\/b><span>: Search for playlists directly on streaming platforms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I spent time searching for playlists on Spotify that had the word \u2018Bathtub\u2019 or \u2018Chill synth\u2019 or \u2018Indie Women\u2019. You can find a lot of stuff if you use the search bar!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Option 2:<\/b><span>\u00a0 Search for playlists by using Chartmetric.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Have you heard of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chartmetric.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chartmetric<\/a>?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Chartmetric is a tool that shows you streaming and social media data on musicians, playlists, and more. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>You can sign up for a free 7 day trial to check it out. After your trial ends, they do have a free tier for DIY artists (though some features won\u2019t be available to you at that level).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>One thing you should try in Chartmetric is looking up artists similar to you. Chartmetric will display what playlists they\u2019re on. Then\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_4B_Add_those_playlists_to_your_list\"><\/span><strong>Step 4B: Add those playlists to your list<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span>Each time you find a playlist, add it to your spreadsheet. And <\/span><b>MAKE SURE TO FIND THE CONTACT INFO<\/b><span> for the playlist curator.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>How?<\/p>\n<p><span>You\u2019ll be surprised \u2014 it\u2019s not too hard to find the contact info for these indie playlist curators. You just have to do a little internet digging.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For example, Spotify playlists will display the full name or username of the playlist curator. You can then search their full name and the playlist name in Google and find them online.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>If a quick Google search doesn\u2019t yield results, copy the link the playlist and type that into the search fields in Twitter, Google, LinkedIn, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Serious curators will be sharing links to their playlists, because they\u2019re proud of their efforts. The more they promote their own playlists, the easier it is for you to find them online. From there, you\u2019re just a tweet, email, or DM away!<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_5_Youre_done_Go_take_a_bath_and_chill\"><\/span>Step 5: You\u2019re done! Go take a bath and chill.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span>Once you\u2019ve done the research, you should have a big list of playlists to pitch to. So what\u2019s the trick to pitching your music?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tip_3_%E2%80%93_Keep_your_pitch_short_and_sweet\"><\/span>Tip #3 \u2013 Keep your pitch short and sweet<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>You don\u2019t need a magic formula or bribery. Every pitch can be similar as long as it\u2019s relevant. You want to be polite, and ask them to listen to your song.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Here\u2019s an example of what my pitch looked like:<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><i><span>\u201cHi Playlist curator,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>I recently found your Spotify playlist \u201cElectro-Pop Mood\u201d and I love it! I have a new electro-pop song called \u2018Fountain of Youth\u2019 that might be perfect for your playlist.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/5AcsKRXAF1czCN8oMK1thb?si=9df817ba936c42e5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span>https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/5AcsKRXAF1czCN8oMK1thb?si=9df817ba936c42e5<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Let me know your thoughts! Have a great week. \u2013 Cristina\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>This pitch is pretty simple. You say hi, let them know why you like their playlist, and then ask them to check out your song. You can adopt this formula and use it every time you pitch to a playlist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Another thing you should know: the link to your music should be on the same platform as the playlist. Like, if you\u2019re pitching to a Spotify playlist, you should then send a link to Spotify.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Why does this matter? You want to make it easy for playlist curators to find you and add you to their playlist. If your song isn\u2019t on their platform yet, they can\u2019t listen and then add you right away. You\u2019d have to get their attention a second time which may be hard.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tip_4_%E2%80%93_Pitch_your_music_to_Spotifys_Editorial_Team\"><\/span>Tip #4 \u2013 Pitch your music to Spotify\u2019s Editorial Team<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You never know what might happen!<\/p>\n<p><span>Spotify editorial playlists are the most followed playlists on Spotify and as a result, they can really help you build your following.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><a href=\"https:\/\/diymusician.cdbaby.com\/music-promotion\/submit-a-song-directly-for-spotify-playlist-consideration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spotify allows anyone to apply for consideration<\/a>, but many indie musicians believe they need to be on a label to actually make one of these playlists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Let me tell you something \u2014 this is FALSE! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I know because I got on one of these playlists and I\u2019m an Indie artist. <\/span><b>Spotify put me on the<a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/playlist\/37i9dQZF1DXagUeYbNSnOA?si=d38b20d049a14c5e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <em>Fresh Finds: Latin<\/em><\/a> playlist with over 100,000 followers.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>So how did I do it?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Heres_how_I_got_on_an_official_Spotify_playlist\"><\/span>Here\u2019s how I got on an official Spotify playlist:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_I_built_up_my_monthly_listener_count_before_pitching_to_Spotify\"><\/span><b>1. I built up my monthly listener count before pitching to Spotify<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span>I released three singles in the months leading up to my album. <a href=\"https:\/\/diymusician.cdbaby.com\/music-promotion\/10-strategies-for-releasing-a-single\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Releasing singles helped me build buzz<\/a> and boost my monthly listeners count to about 1,500 before I released the album.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It was only when I released my album that I <a href=\"https:\/\/diymusician.cdbaby.com\/music-promotion\/submit-a-song-directly-for-spotify-playlist-consideration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pitched the music to Spotify<\/a>. That way, I had a higher monthly listener count when they reviewed my application.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Be_specific_about_you_and_your_music_in_your_application\"><\/span><strong>2. Be specific about you and your music in your application<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span>Spotify has a lot of playlists, so your best bet is to help them find the perfect fit for your music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When you fill out the application, make sure to choose really specific genres for your music. And be clear about who you are and who your music serves. Take the time to provide all the info they ask for: instrumentation, mood, and more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Whatever is specific to you, make sure to share it!
