Sound issues<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Maybe the PA is broken. Maybe you show up and realize you have to run sound yourself. There aren\u2019t enough inputs. There\u2019s only one monitor. The mics are missing. Or maybe the sound engineer is just phoning it in.<\/p>\n<p>You will encounter sound issues at some point on tour. Can you push through and still deliver a good show?<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Trouble_with_the_venue\"><\/span>2. Trouble with the venue<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Surly staff. Hostile regulars. Crap acoustics. No green room. The bar manager says \u201cyou can\u2019t get your drink tickets until after your set is over at 1am\u201d (true story).<\/p>\n<p>Every musicians knows what it\u2019s like to walk into a new room and immediately think \u201cOh, this isn\u2019t good.\u201d Can you play a great show anyway?<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Fatigue_and_grumpiness\"><\/span>3. Fatigue and grumpiness<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Touring taxes the body and mind. Long days of driving. Late nights with little sleep. Close quarters with the same damn people every day for weeks at a time.<\/p>\n<p>Can you figure out how to find space, get rest, and keep communication clear and healthy anyways?<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Outdoor_shows_are%E2%80%A6_outdoors\"><\/span>4. Outdoor shows are\u2026 outdoors<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Extreme heat or humidity. Freezing fingers. Computers and effects that won\u2019t work. LEDs you can\u2019t see. Listeners spread across a park or square. Sound escaping into the void of open air.<\/p>\n<p>Outdoor shows suck. Can you push through it and NOT suck?<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Wildcard_artists_on_the_bill\"><\/span>5. Wildcard artists on the bill<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The other act could be clique-y and critical. You might be intimidated if you want to impress them. All their fans could leave after the opening set. The band might yell at each other onstage, berate the audience, and then break up in the parking lot afterwards (true story).<\/p>\n<p>The other acts can have a big impact on the show\u2019s overall mood. Can you deliver anyway?<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Broken_gear\"><\/span>6. Broken gear<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The click isn\u2019t audible in your in-ears. A favorite synth melts down mid-show. Your guitar string snaps during a solo.<\/p>\n<p>Your equipment will break. Can you get on with the show?<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_Vehicle_breakdowns\"><\/span>7. Vehicle breakdowns<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>It isn\u2019t just your instruments. Your car or van may crap out on your too. Your plane or train could be delayed or cancelled. Anyone who has toured enough will know, you can\u2019t always get from here to there on-time. Even later if you breakdown in a small town on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Can you stay calm and get the problem fixed ASAP?<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"8_The_%E2%80%9Cstage%E2%80%9D_isnt_a_stage\"><\/span>8. The \u201cstage\u201d isn\u2019t a stage<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This is part of venue troubles, of course, but warrants its own section. You show up and realize the stage is an 8\u00d78 piece of plywood. The band can\u2019t fit. The performance area is half hidden behind a giant pillar. Or most alarming, there\u2019s no stage at all. You\u2019re set up in the corner of the room and bound to have some drunk bump the mic into your teeth.<\/p>\n<p>Can you deal?<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>Those are just some of the things that are bound to go wrong once in a while on tour. You can\u2019t always \u201cfix\u201d these issues, but you should prepare to work around them.<\/p>\n<p>If you perform a great show, the audience will experience a great show. If you play like crap, the audience probably won\u2019t blame it on the sound, venue, or gear. They\u2019ll blame it on you.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Want to work around these issues?
