this time, DMOZ had been\u00a0mostly forgotten as a resource. Perhaps the biggest surprise was that it took so long.<\/p>\n<p>DMOZ was born in June 1998 as \u201cGnuHoo,\u201d then quickly changed to \u201cNewHoo,\u201d a rival to the Yahoo Directory at the time. It was acquired by Netscape in November 1998 and renamed\u00a0the Netscape Open Directory.
