However, a later Search Engine Land <a href=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/googles-fred-update-hit-low-value-content-sites-aimed-revenue-helping-users-271165\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">analysis of Fred<\/a> indicated that the update targeted low-value content sites that put revenue above helping their users \u2013 and that many affected sites saw up to a 90% drop in traffic.<\/p>\n<p>Many called this the Fred Update, which came from Google\u2019s Gary Illyes, who had jokingly suggested that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/methode\/status\/839817382088572928\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">all updates be named \u201cFred.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0It stuck with this update.<\/p>\n<p>Illyes wouldn\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/google-search-leads-wont-let-us-talk-fred-update-271874\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">confirm Fred<\/a> until SMX West on March 23, when he said the update targeted specific techniques that were well-documented within the\u00a0Google webmaster guidelines.
