I am honestly surprised to report that I am seeing the chatter build up around ranking drops since the rollout of the Google November spam update. I am seeing numerous posts from people in the forums and on social that they got hit by this update – some claiming to be 100% white hat and not spammy.

Google Ads has added to the keyword planner tool a new column for YoY, year over year, change. Last month, Google added three month percent change and three month trend type to the report, and now we have the YoY change column.

We actually covered this topic before when we covered how Gary Illyes of Google spoke about being on the edge of quality several months ago. John Mueller of Google is now talking about being on the edge of indexing and how that shows some of your pages have quality issues.

Microsoft announced it has added the ability to browse Bing Shopping by department, store tabs, editors picks, insights on item popularity, price across multiple stores, and deals. Microsoft said “these enhanced options provide useful hover menus and informative page guides which highlight choices, deals, and trends.”

Matt Rogerson, the Director of public policy at Guardian Media Group, posted a Twitter thread dissecting why he believes the claims from The Sun and Mail Online about Google Search mistreating them, are false. He then spent time going through why Google does not rank them well – and it might be heavily around author bylines.

Last week, Google announced the rollout of the November spam update, which Google said targeted types of content spam. Glenn Gabe said it may have targeted cloaking content spam that had links injected in that cloaked content.

Google has talked about how machine written content is currently against Google’s guidelines but some day might not be. We heard Google talk about this change in 2017, yes over four years ago, but still today, machine generated content is against Google’s guidelines. But that may change soon, suggests John Mueller of Google.

With the Google page experience update coming to desktop sites in February 2022, that means that intrusive interstitials as a signal will also apply to desktop sites. John Mueller of Google confirmed this on Twitter saying “Yes, that’s my understanding. Essentially all of the Page Experience factors would then apply to desktop too.”

Google is doing some interesting things in local search, not just with renaming Google My Business but with new user interface features and Google Ads offline sale sales integrations.
